26 Jan 2010

Diane visited Southwold Primary in Detmold Road, Upper Clapton on Friday January 22 to congratulate the school on their excellent Key Stage 2 results.

Headteacher Gary Boyd and Deputy Head Caroline King have helped the school progress from the bottom five per cent of schools nationally, to the top twenty per cent over the last 3 years.

Diane thanked them for all their hard work before speaking to pupils about life as an MP and handing out awards at their school assembly. Diane was also shown around the school’s new soundproof music room, which includes musical instruments bought with royalties left to them by the late lead singer of the Gutter Brothers, Dennis Johnson, who attended Southwold as a youngster.

Diane said:
“Gary, Caroline and the team at Southwold deserve a massive pat on the back for all they’ve done to improve standards. It’s impossible to think just 3 years ago the school was in the bottom 5 per cent nationally and now it’s in the fourth most improved in the country. I’m sorry they weren’t able to be congratulated by Gordon Brown in person but I know for them the real reward is in seeing their pupils succeed. I think they are doing a great job and I’ll be making sure their continued success is acknowledged as they deserve.”
