29 Jan 2010

Diane visited Stoke Newington School and Sixth Form on Monday and met some promising young politicians.

‘Student voice’, the school council, gathered to speak to Diane about the changes they had been making to their school in Clissold Road.

Fifteen year-old Trang Nguyen told Diane how the council had developed a new late policy which had been implemented throughout the school after they proposed it at a senior leadership meeting. Seyid Aydin, 16, told Diane about a pupil teacher scheme which had been set up to help struggling students.

Diane also took part in a Government and Politics lesson where she discussed news items of the day with sixth form students and was shown around the school’s media facilities including a fully equipped recording studio.

The school which has specialist status in Media, Arts and Science, is currently undergoing building work as part of the government initiative Building Schools for the Future (BSF) which is due to be completed in May.

Diane said: “It was good to see so many young people getting involved in the way their school is run and making a real difference.”
